Garmin Firmware Issues - as reported DEC 2016

Last Updated: Aug 10, 2017 02:57PM EDT
Garmin's Support Team has confirmed several device firmware issues which are impacting Garmin data records that are being processed by Validic. Garmin intends to rollout firmware fixes for both of these issues in early Q1 2017.

Validic has attempted to mitigate the non-standard UTC offsets as much as possible, but our record processing is dependent on a permanent fix from Garmin for the firmware issue. Some records will still be impacted.
Issue #1: Non-Standard UTC Offsets
For some devices (mostly in the Vivo-family) users may receive non-standard UTC offsets (e.g., -00:01 or +07:59).  In the short term, Validic will pass the offsets in the same manner they receive them from Garmin.  This may result in routine data (e.g., steps, calories, etc) not matching what is visible in a Garmin user's app view.  If Validic receives a subsequent update with a standard timestamp, we will update the record to have the correct timestamp.

In early Q1 2017, Garmin intends to roll out a fix that will correct such offsets so that the resulting offsets will correspond to a standard known timezone (:00, :15, :30, :45).
Issue #2: Missing Active Time
Some users have reported that "Active seconds" which appear in one record are missing in subsequent record updates.  This stems from a hardware/firmware issue on the Garmin side related to the Vivoki and Vivohub.  Garmin intends to release a firmware/hardware update sometime in the early part of 2017.

Please continue to report all examples of errant timestamps and missing active time to Validic's Support Team. While Validic has a limited ability to mitigate these issues with a permanent firmware fix, we will document the support cases and report to Garmin for any additionally needed troubleshooting.
